Welcome to the spring edition of our Same Sky Different Clouds: Digital Skills for Life newsletter! This Skilling Queenslanders for Work project, proudly funded by the Queensland Government, is brought to you by TIMS and Concinnity under the Community Foundation Skills program. It’s open to people of all abilities and diversities.

A big thank you to our community members for supporting this program through three intakes this year. Intake 3 is in full swing and very busy. Check out the stories and photos of our participants’ digital journey since the last edition.

We invite you to help this program continue to flourish by referring potential students who meet the focus of the program and the relevant eligibility criteria.

Same Sky Different Clouds: Digital Skills for Life Overview

This isn’t just another computer course. We start by identifying the digital inconveniences our participants face daily and what they hope to achieve.

It’s about using everyday tools, including your phone. We focus on practical tech use: at the doctor’s, Centrelink, responding to messages, uploading files, scanning documents, and avoiding scams.

Key Points:

9 weeks of face-to-face training
3 days a week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9:00am to 3:00pm
Tuesday and Wednesday at Concinnity, Thursday at Cobb+Co
6 weeks of ongoing digital support after training
Free for participants

Intake 4 commences on Tuesday 15 October 2024.

Murri Garden Project

Enhancing Digital Skills at Cobb+Co Museum

Every Thursday, our training program participants head to Toowoomba’s Cobb+Co Museum to put their new digital skills to the test. They’re actively contributing to the digitisation and improvement of the Murri Garden. Skills in action include:

Effective internet research
Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Email communication
Digital file management

Excitingly, Cobb+Co Museum has tasked Intake 3 with researching and proposing an extension and renovation of the garden. This proposal will support a funding application to Queensland Museums to bring their vision to life.

Intake 1 and Intake 2 Graduation

Celebrating DSfL Graduates

On August 8th, 2024, DSfL participants from Intakes 1 and 2 celebrated their graduation at Cobb+Co Museum. Despite some absences due to illness, attendees enjoyed a presentation on the program’s journey, followed by refreshments and cake.

A big thank you to the Toowoomba organisations that referred these participants. Special congratulations to our graduates: two are now pursuing online certificate studies, and two have started new jobs. Well done to all for your progress in digital skills!

Gumbi Gumbi Garden visit

Intake 3 Visits Gumbi Gumbi Gardens

Intake 3 recently explored the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens at USQ, designed with input from Toowoomba Historical Elders and Jarowair Elders. Inspired by a Carnival of Flowers brochure, participants used their digital skills to research and locate the garden.

Guided by Paul Carmody, USQ Lecturer (First Nations Studies), they learned about the deep connection of First Australians to the land and the various uses of plants for food, medicine, and tools. A big thank you to Paul for an enlightening and moving experience.
